‘Designing messages to the public’

Where the purpose of the shopping window is to lure the consumer to wanting to purchase certain items, the designer or artist display has a different agenda that doesn’t necessarily want to connect to the viewers own personal desires and needs, but rather create a tension that will demand the viewer to reflect on what he or she is looking at. Designers and artists have also been invited to exhibit in shopping malls or department stores, working with the advertising space more creatively. They are playing with the format, making the advertising display extent into exhibition space, a showroom, or a diorama. How can Depot Basel use their windows of the former Bureau de Change in order to display topics around culture and design?

Depot Basel intends to be communicating through the window display outside their opening hours. The concept of showing through a window display will be discussed, tested and developed into a long-term format for Depot Basel. The intention is to connect to the viewer.

“DISPLAY” will start this weekend from 21 – 23 November 2014 at Depot Basel, in a workshop and lecture format conducted by The Farm. The Farm is an equal and temporary society that is focused on production. The Farm is devoted to the practice of making, discussing and organizing art and design through experiment. All knowledge harvested is to be used by everyone who joins The Farm.

On the 2 December 2014, for its tenth edition and one-year anniversary, TEOK collaborates with Depot Basel reflecting on the many dimensions of display and investigating different forms of “showing”. TEOK returns integrated in Depot Basel’s DISPLAY initiative, with an expanded roster of speakers and an open room to welcome all guests. Bring a snack or drink for the table, and join us for TEOK X as we take a trip together to the world of display!
