Forum 1 – Solidarity
The ‘Forum for an Attitude’ takes place in two places: In form of a series of five ‘Forums’ at Depot Basel in Basel and as an exhibition at Vitra Design Museum Gallery in Weil am Rhein.
The exhibition describes design as a versatile discipline. It analyses the relation between the designers’ attitude and the work produced. The exhibited contemporary designers, who have left their formal education not that long ago, produce subjective works shaped by their very own natures and characters. What are the convictions which motivate them to act as designers? What kind of motives do their informed and thoughtful suggestions derive from? The display of works and attitudes by twenty-four designers, as well as insights into contemporary design occupation and also an question device for the visitors configure a Forum − a designated representation in a space − for what the designers want to express and effect.
With: Pablo Calderón Salazar, Charlotte Dumoncel d’Argence, Julien Carretero, Annika Frye, Fixperts, Jasmina Grase & Nils Chudy, Tove Greitz, Joanne M.Hakkert, Jing He, Jesse Howard, Daniel Klapsing, Lina-Marie Koeppen, Myriam Marti & Nando Schmidlin, Lisa Ochsenbein, Alicia Ongay-Perez, Giacomo Piovan, PROOFFLab Magazine, Tobias Revell, Nektar Solomon, Michaela Tomiškov & Jakub Janďourek, Marjan van Aubel, Julia Van Zanten, Bob Vos, Mugi Yamamoto, Will Yates-Johnson
The five ‘Forums’ at Depot Basel, which take place simultaneously to the exhibition ‘Forum for an Attitude’ at the Vitra Design Museum Gallery in Weil am Rhein, provide the frames for professional, yet amicable exchange between non-designers and designers, practitioners, thinkers and amateurs. The ‘Forums’ are both a space for exchange, development and testing of ideas, and a physical place, where attitude is adopted and a network of people can grow. With ‘attitude’ as object of matter, a program of lectures, workshops, field trips, book salons, games and gatherings around a meal or a table encourage a perspective on the position of the designer. Depot Basel considers the gathering of people for collective dialogues and activities most important; the endeavor to break away from conventional ideas of collaboration and exchange is what matters when deciding what we do as a space for contemporary design. We want to not only show design, but also take on the opportunity to develop it further together.
The participation in the ‘Forums’ is only possible upon application. Depot Basel takes care of the catering within the program and asks for a fee.
Saturday evenings from 20.00 the Forums are open to everyone.
Forum 1 – Solidarity
16 – 18.10.2015
A weekend celebrating the importance of the personal and professional togetherness: With talks and lectures concerning solidarity as base for action. What can connectedness through collective ideas, activities and goals signify with regard to collaboration?
Forum 2 – Visibility
05 – 08.11.2015
Creative practice as socio-political action vs. the prevalent public display. How visible do we have to be, where and with what? Considerations and experiments on responsible action within and with the public sphere. And a trial to visualize possible fields for action and representation spaces.
Forum 3 – Intuition
19 – 22.11.2015
A collective search of children and adults for the right amount of impartiality. Exhibition of the results of a workshop series concerning the mediation of design with third-graders from the Schulhaus Insel in Basel. Forum 3 is open for everyone without application. It’s a Kult & Co project conducted by Eva Feldkamp and Veronika Gombert for Depot Basel.
Forum 4 – Knowledge
10 – 13.12.2015
Suitable situations for knowledge production: Maximum institutionalization, total autonomy or something in between? A workshop on the curriculum of a sustainable curriculum for design studies.
Forum 5 – Tools
21 – 24.01.2016
What kind of instruments and strategies are needed for professional action in the new scopes? A collective approach to the adequate means and ways for a responsible action. And also the acquisition of a respective glossary.
