Dabook#1: Famous Ordinary Things is the first title in the DABOOK series, an editorial spin-off of DADADUM, that explores design culture in its broadest sense. Famous Ordinary Things is a tribute to modest objects developed within Swiss design culture. ‘Famous’ Swiss actors from the creative, artistic or political field contributed to the book by taking a snapshot of a design item from their environment with their mobile phone.

The collected resulting images underline the contemporary landscape of home and office interiors in Switzerland — showing how these objects impact our everyday lives. Famous Ordinary Things is a beautiful kaleidoscopic voyage through nostalgic and progressive visions, whereby the relationship between object and owner is filled with anecdotes and irony.

Depot Basel and Dabook invite you to the book launch of Famous Ordinary Things, the first title in the Dabook series – founded by Demian Conrad and Rob van Leijsen. The evening opens at 19.00 and the book presentation will start around 19.30, followed by a round table discussion in presence of Matylda Krzykowski (Depot Basel), Demian Conrad and Rob van Leijsen (Dabook) and several contributors to the project. During the event the book will be available for purchase for the first time.

About the project

The book Famous Ordinary Things is a tribute to modest objects developed within Swiss design culture. The contributions are snapshots of personal items taken with a mobile phone by ‘famous’ Swiss actors in the creative, artistic or political field. We designed this book as a collaborative and participatory project – resulting in a beautiful kaleidoscopic voyage through nostalgic and progressive visions, whereby the relationship between object and owner is filled with personal anecdotes and irony. The images underline the ordinary character of a contemporary landscape of home and office interiors in Switzerland – showing how these objects impact our everyday lives.

With contributions from: Mario Botta, Alfredo Häberli, Meret Ernst, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Olaf Breuning, Christian Paul Kägi, Samuel Leuenberger, Alain de Botton and many others.

Dabook

Famous Ordinary Things is the first title in the DABOOK series. We will publish new issues at irregular intervals, and aim to establish ourselves among other independent design publishers. The series will explore design culture in its broadest sense, and address questions about how design shapes our lives and the spaces we live in, how beauty interacts with our everyday emotions, how to keep your apartment green and sustainable, and how simplicity can bring happiness. We hope our books will contribute to your lifestyle – even if just a little.
